Park Inn Mulranny Hotel, Clew Bay, Co. Mayo
About the project: The Great Western Hotel has long been a famous landmark perched high on the coastal road to Achill Island. Originally built in 1890, the hotel was served by the now-defunct Achill railway, and the hotel still retains the air of faded grandeur which is such a significant part of the charm of this unique location. The scale of work involved was significant, as over time the hotel had fallen into a state of disrepair. The brief was to retain and restore the fabric of the hotel, ensuring that the scale and integrity of the building was maintained, whilst integrating contemporary elements into the interior, including a new leisure and conference block, and new bedroom extensions to the facade and rear elevations. Additionally, our work on a series of nearby apartments is part of the same overall project.
A large part of the challenge in this project was the integration of old with modern, and the finished building gives exciting glimpses of the old juxtaposed against the new.
